Description
The Walthamstow Tramway Offices and Depot is a tramway office and depot built in 1905. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with terracotta detailing. The front block features a high, unusual slate roof, while the rear has a pitched slate roof. The building is two storeys tall and has a three-window range, with an additional three-window range on the left return and a late 20th-century fire escape on the right, which is not included in this listing.
The ground floor has round-arched windows with brick and terracotta voussoirs, while the first floor features flat-arched windows, including a central oriel window topped by a semi-circular pediment. The central range is flanked by full-height brick pilasters that terminate at the roofline in a broad segmental pediment, which contains a shield and clock in the tympanum. A balustrade forms a parapet over the end ranges and returns.
On the left return, there is a projecting bay topped by a Dutch gable, with a rectangular bay appended, which served as the waiting room on the ground floor. The return rear wings have segmental-arched windows, and there is a sill and lintel bond to the first floor. The rear of the two-storey block steps down with broken joins, concealing the division between the public waiting room and the conductor's office. There are stacks located at the rear of the mansard and the back wall of the lower two-storey wing.
This listing also includes the single-storey wings that extend back to the rear of the site, built of brown brick in English bond with red brick trim and hipped slate roofs. These wings have segmental-arched openings and are set back to form a service area with shallow courts leading from the main block to the rear. The wing houses various functions, including a notice room with a three-window range, a superintendent's office with a two-window range, a recessed court serving as a transformer room, a "spare" room, and toilet facilities. All stacks retain their original design.
