Description
The Chelmondiston War Memorial, built in 1919, is a stone structure dedicated to those who served in the wars. It features an elaborately carved stone urn topped with a wreath, positioned on a tall circular column that has an ornate scrolled capital. At the base of the column, there is a carved stone lion, all resting on a tall rectangular plinth that has a step-carved capital and base. The memorial is elevated on a two-stepped base and is surrounded by a diamond-shaped flowerbed.
The main inscription is located on the front of the plinth, facing the road. It includes a wreath and garland in raised relief with the dates 1914 and 1918, followed by the words: IN MEMORY OF/ THE BRAVE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THE/ MOTHERLAND IN/ THE GREAT WAR/. The names and dates of death of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the side faces of the plinth.
Additionally, the front face of the base of the plinth bears the inscription 1939 – 1945, and the names of the Second World War fallen are listed on the front of the upper step of the base.
