Description
The stable block to Woolverstone Hall, built in the 1770s, originally served as a stable and coach-house but has since been converted into accommodation. It was designed by John Johnson for William Berners and features Tudor brickwork alongside a mid-19th century water tower and later alterations. The front is made of Woolpit brick, with the entrance adorned in rusticated Portland stone and Coade stone ornamentation. The returns and courtyard interior are constructed from red brick, some of which has been reused. The building has slate roofs and a quadrangle plan, standing two storeys high.
The entrance range consists of nine bays, with a central carriage arch that has a mask keystone and paterae in the spandrels. Above the arch is an open dentilled pediment that contains a clock. Each wing has three recessed bays, featuring round-arched recesses on the ground floor and an ashlar band at the first floor, where casement windows are located. The outer bays have full-height round-arched recesses with thermal windows at the first floor. A parapet with a rectangular panel, flanked by paterae and topped with ball finials, crowns the structure.
At the entrance bay, there is a four-stage tower with a rusticated lower part, pilastered angles, and arcading above, along with a frieze and dentilled pedimented gables. The courtyard interior includes round-arched recesses and a first-floor band with segment-arched six-pane sashes above. 20th-century alterations include the addition of garage doors on one side. The site was previously occupied by The Old Hall, which was demolished when Woolverstone Hall was constructed, and the stable block incorporates some of the reused bricks from that earlier building.
