Description
A late 18th-century walled kitchen garden with early 19th-century alterations, enclosing early to mid-19th century and later 20th-century structures. The garden is built with soft, orange/red bricks laid in English bond, featuring a dentilled top course and gabled coping. It has a rectangular plan, with a central garden surrounded by a part-buttressed wall on all sides, and two smaller slip gardens to the south and east. An open area to the west contains large 20th-century glass houses. Concrete render is visible on the wall between the central and east slip gardens. The east wall has been modified in the late 19th century to accommodate a Dairy Farm. Two doorways with shallow segmented brick heads are located in the centre of the long sides, and a battened door in the north wall leads to the former Head Gardener’s cottage. A late 18th or early 19th-century wrought iron gateway, in the centre of the north wall, leads into the surrounding estate parkland and includes a single large gate with side panels and an overthrow decorated with scrollwork. Woolverstone Hall, built in 1776 by John Johnson for William Berners, is a Grade I listed building, and the walled garden lies to the southwest of the hall. The walled garden is a good example of a late 18th-century kitchen garden contemporary with the Grade I listed hall and located within the broader landscape of the estate. The wall remains largely intact, and the gated entrance, doorways, and internal divisions are significant surviving features. The garden has group value with the hall and is considered to have special interest as an individual structure justifying its Grade II listing.
