Description

The walled garden, likely dating to 1812-1819, sits to the north-east of Sheringham Hall. It was constructed contemporaneously with the hall and designed landscape by Humphry Repton, and is considered one of his most successful garden designs. The garden is rectangular, approximately nine bays east-west and six bays north-south, enclosed by a brick wall laid in English bond with exterior flint panels, featuring interior and exterior brick buttresses and gabled coping. To the south are lean-to structures and glasshouses, probably of the later 19th century, remodelled in the 20th century, attached to the exterior of the wall. Two side walls extend from the east and west corners, providing shelter. Several roofless, partly sunken sheds of the early 20th century are detached from the wall. A two-story brick and flint gardeners' cottage is attached at the north-east corner, with two further exterior buildings attached to the north wall. A double entrance, with 20th-century brick piers, is centrally located on the west wall, accessed by a drive to the hall. An additional double-width entrance is in the centre of the north wall, leading to buildings attached to the exterior, while a small single door at the north-east corner was likely used by the gardener. The glasshouses to the south have a 20th-century heating system and water pump, but there’s no visible boiler house. While the wall has been repaired in the 19th and 20th centuries, it remains largely intact. The gardeners’ cottage and sheds attached to the north elevation are likely of mid-19th century date. The garden is designated at Grade II for being a substantially complete early 19th-century walled garden, its contemporary relationship and group value with the Grade II* listed Sheringham Hall and its landscaped grounds, and for being part of the renowned Repton designed landscape.
