Description
The Upper Sheringham War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with an additional name added after the Second World War. It is made of stone and features a canopied Latin calvary on a slender, tapering octagonal shaft that has a moulded collar and foot. This shaft stands on a square plinth with notched upper corners, which is placed atop a two-tiered, pentagonal base, where the upper step is shallow and the lower step is deep and corniced. The square plinth displays inscriptions in relief lettering. The inscription reads: "TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND TO KEEP IN REMEMBRANCE/ THE/ MEN OF UPPER SHERINGHAM/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ RIGHT AND JUSTICE IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918// (NAMES)// 1939 - 1945/ (NAME)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN/ HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIEND."
