Description

The East Keal War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1920, designed by Ernest Browning of Messrs E Browning and Sons from Spilsby. It is made from carved limestone and is situated within a memorial garden on the northern side of the A16. The memorial stands 4.6 meters high and features a Calvary Cross made of Clipsham stone. It is set on a triple-stepped octagonal base with a slightly tapering square plinth. The octagonal cross shaft tapers towards the top, which culminates in a gabled ring-headed cross that has the image of the crucified Christ carved on the southern face.

On the southern face of the plinth, there is an incised inscription that honors the men of East Keal who lost their lives in the Great War from 1914 to 1918, along with their names. The inscription reads: "IN PROUD MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF EAST KEAL WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 / [NAMES] / THE MEN WERE VERY GOOD UNTO US / AND WE NOT HURT. THEY WERE / A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY." Additionally, a later inscription for the Second World War is added to the western face, which reads '1939-1945' followed by more names.
