Description
The Hough-on-the-Hill War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed by Streather and Winn, unveiled on 31 October 1920. It is made of Clipsham stone and is situated within the churchyard of All Saints Church. The memorial features a carved Calvary cross, approximately 3.9 meters tall, which depicts a figure of Christ crucified and is topped by a triangular roof. This cross is mounted on a tapering shaft that has a carved decorated collar, resting on a plinth.
The front face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: "TO THE HONOUR OF OUR BRAVE MEN WHO DIED FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The plinth stands on a single-stepped base that is flanked by low walls. Additionally, there is a dedication for the Second World War on the face of the base, which reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE LIVES ARDENTLY LIVED AND GENEROUSLY GIVEN FOR FREEDOM IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945 (NAMES) THESE WERE HIS SERVANTS IN [rest illegible]."
