Description
The Hollesley and Shingle Street War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in the churchyard to the west of the Church of All Saints, which is a Grade II* listed building.
The memorial features a stone cross fleury atop a tapering octagonal shaft, which is set on a tapering octagonal plinth and a three-stepped octagonal base. It stands approximately 4 meters high.
On the north face of the plinth, there is a main inscription in incised lettering that reads: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM HOLLESLEY AND/ SHINGLE STREET, WHO/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR./ 1914–1919/ –/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE."
The names of the fallen are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth, organized by service: the east face lists five names under "ARMY," the north-east face lists nine names under "ROYAL NAVY," the north-west face lists five names under "ARMY," and the west face lists ten names under "ARMY SUFFOLK REG." Notably, the last two names on the Royal Navy panel are smaller and do not include regiments, indicating that these may have been added later.
