Description
The parterre retaining walls, urns, steps, and pool basin with a statue of Diana are located at the rear of Woolverstone Hall. These features were designed in the 1850s by W A Nesfield for the Berners family. Made of artificial stone, the design includes a double flight of steps leading to the parterre retaining wall, which surrounds a pool basin that holds a statue of Diana on a pedestal. Additional parterre retaining walls flank the house and are circular in shape, with urns positioned at the center. This layout is part of the garden design created by Nesfield, which was described in 1867 as "the masterpiece of all his productions." The layout of the parterre remains distinguishable and is illustrated in the Gardeners Chronicle from February 16, 1867. A photograph of the site is available in the National Monuments Record.
