Description
The Cat House is an eyecatcher and house built in 1793, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a slate roof in the Gothick style. The front of the building is segment-arched on plan and consists of two storeys and three bays. It has a canted porch supported by slender cast iron columns, which contains a studded door under a segmental brick arch with an inserted hoodmould. The windows are casement style, with pointed heads and cusped Y-tracery, and there are tiny cusped lights flanking the porch. The first-floor casement windows are segment-arched with pointed lights. The north gable end is embattled and features a large four-light window with intersecting tracery, dating from around 1985, which replaced a former mock window with pointed tracery. The rear of the building has similar fenestration to the front. There is an entrance to an extension from around 1985 on the south gable end, and a central stack. The Cat House is said to have been used to guide smugglers and is associated with B Jones Follies and Grottos from 1974.
