Description
The balustraded retaining wall with gateways, steps, and ha-has is located at the rear of Woolverstone Hall and dates from the 1850s. It was designed by W A Nesfield for the Berners family. The structure is made of artificial stone and brick, featuring cast and wrought iron gates. The rusticated ha-has rise from 1 to 2 metres in height, and the walls are topped with balustrades. The opposing gateways have corniced piers that are adorned with banded ball finials. The central gates are flanked by railings that include fleur-de-lys bars and spearhead dogbars, and the gates themselves feature central oval and scrollwork designs. This wall is part of the garden layout that was illustrated in the Gardeners Chronicle on February 16, 1867.
