Description

The Butt and Oyster Public House is a public house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure that is pebble-dashed, with red plain and pantiled roofs and red brick ridge stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan with two gables facing south and includes 20th-century extensions on both the west and east sides.

The exterior is two storeys high, with the ground floor facing the river showcasing three angled bay windows. The remaining windows are mainly small paned vertically sliding sashes arranged in two-storey ranges. There is a single-storey lean-to extension on the right, as well as additional single-storey parapeted extensions on the river frontage to the left, which have small paned sash windows, and to the right with small paned casements. A parapeted single-storey porch is located in the re-entrant angle on the left.

Inside, the public bar features some 17th-century fielded panelling on the south wall and a 19th-century bar counter. The spine beam is supported by knee-braces and a cast iron column in the centre. There is a red brick and tile fire surround from around 1900, with a similar surround in the dining room. In the smoke room, above the fireplace, there is a 17th-century carved panel depicting naively treated figures on the sides and varied ornamentation, along with a 20th-century match board dado.
