Description
This is a unified composition of buildings dating to around 1840, located on the North Side of College Approach. The buildings are three storeys high with a concealed roof, and are stuccoed. Numbers 9, 10, 20 and 21 are more elaborate, each being one wide bay, while the others are plainer, with two windows each. The end sections (numbers 9, 10, 20 and 21) have heavily rusticated pilasters which support an entablature with long, scrolled brackets to the cornice. Above this is a parapet with flat pilasters and stepped finials. The second-floor windows have plain reveals and projecting, bracketed sills. The first-floor Venetian windows have a segmental centre light with a triple keystone and impost blocks acting as lintels to the side lights, with a raised stucco area and pediment above. The ground floor shop fronts are separated by wide rusticated pilasters with reeded borders, and are topped by projecting cornices. The doors are of four panels, the upper two glazed, with a cornice head and a rectangular fanlight with glazing bars. Number 21 has a filled shop front with an ordinary sash window substituted. Most windows are sashes with glazing bars, although those of numbers 9 and 10 have been replaced. Panelled stallrisers are present at the shop fronts. Numbers 11 to 19 are stuccoed with cornices and a parapet. Numbers 14 to 16 project slightly, with number 15 having a higher parapet and bracketed cornices to the first-floor windows. A cill band runs along the first floor. The sash windows have mostly been replaced, but retain glazing bars. The first-floor windows of numbers 14 to 16, and all ground-floor windows, have flat, stucco surrounds, the ground floor ones featuring raised, semicircular centres. The doors are of one long, stoutly beaded panel in a stucco surround of paired quasi-pilasters and a cornice with a raised semi-circular centre. The listed buildings on the North Side of College Approach form a group with Number 38 King William Walk.
