Description

The buildings at 13-23 West Square date from around 1850 to 1860 and form part of a larger square, with numbers 13 and 14 situated at the centre of the north side. Numbers 13 and 14 are four-storey stucco buildings with pilaster strips and a low-hipped slate roof. They feature two windows per floor, each with an architrave surround that is eared above the first floor. The ground floors have tripartite windows with rustication, alongside panelled doors topped with semi-circular fanlights, flanked by rusticated piers and cornices. Numbers 15 to 23 are three-storey buildings, with later additions of attics. They are also stucco-faced with rusticated ground floors and sill courses. Like numbers 13 and 14, these buildings have two windows per floor within architrave surrounds. They have panelled doors, semi-circular fanlights, and rusticated arches surrounding the door openings. Numbers 19 to 23 have two-storey canted bays, and their doors are topped with rectangular fanlights within architrave surrounds featuring triple keystones. While the buildings have undergone alterations and feature later glazing, they are listed for their group value, as they contribute to the overall character of West Square. The listed buildings of West Square are considered to form a group.
