Description

The Royal Naval College Gates, gate piers, and lodges at the west entrance date from the 18th century and are situated on the main east-west axis. The structure features two large, square piers made of Portland stone, which have plinths, vermiculate rusticated quoins, a cornice, and a high solid parapet adorned with carved trophies of arms. There are round-arched niches in the main shaft of the piers. Above the parapets, the swept plinths support large ball finials that display lines of latitude and longitude made from copper strips.

The central entrance consists of a double cast iron gate, which is topped with wrought iron cresting and an arched overthrow that includes a lampholder. Flanking the gate are one-storey lodges with an attic, constructed of red brick and featuring Portland stone dressings, including plinths, vermiculate rusticated quoins, window architraves, and borders of an open attic pediment. The attic contains a lunette, while the ground floor has sash windows with glazing bars. The entrances to the lodges are located on the inner return, and there is a one-storey, one-window extension to the north lodge.
