Description
The market entrance, built in 1831, is a two-storey structure with five windows. The central three-bay section projects slightly and is situated above a wide, open carriageway. It is constructed of stucco and features entablatures on both floors, topped with a parapet. The first floor has an inscription in the frieze that reads "GREENWICH MARKET, ERECTED MDCCCXXXI." On either side of the archway, there is a colonnade of paired Doric columns, with recesses that separate the central section from the one-bay side sections. The first-floor sash windows have glazing bars and are framed by moulded architraves, friezes, and cornices; the side bays also feature pediments. The ground floor openings are round arches with moulded architraves, and there is an impost string that runs continuously with the cornice head above the six-panel double doors. The entrance is adorned with radial fanlights that include margin lights. The listed buildings on the south side of College Approach form a group with Nos 37 and 37A King William Walk.
