Description

10-12 George Street dates from 1833 and was originally constructed as the old market. The three-storey elevation to George Street is stuccoed, with a cornice and parapet, and a string course that acts as the sill to the second-floor windows. A small central projection features a false pediment, above a rectangular entrance to the market, which has cast iron gates contemporary with the building. The first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, and the second-floor windows are smaller and of a similar design. The ground floor currently contains three small 19th-century shop fronts and, to the right, an archway with pilasters, an impost, a keyblock, a fanlight, and a cornice. The rear facade, facing West Street, has open arches and similar cast iron gates, although two arches have been blocked. The interior of the market is an open space supported by cast iron columns. The listed buildings in George Street are grouped together for their group value.
