Description

This is an 18th-century building located on the South side of High Street. It comprises two houses, numbers 53 and 55, forming a large block of three storeys. The ground floor is stuccoed with a grooved surface designed to resemble stonework. Above this, the building is tile-hung, with a moulded, reeded frieze between the ground and first floors. The first floor overhangs, with the frieze defining the overhang's edge. Long and short painted wooden quoins accentuate the corners. The roof is tiled, with a bracketed eaves cornice. The building has five sash windows, most of which retain their original glazing bars. Number 53 has a modern shop front, while number 55 features two round-headed doorcases, each containing a semi-circular fanlight and a six-panelled, moulded door. A large, round-headed double doorway connects the two houses, providing access to a passageway that runs through them. Numbers 17 to 57 on the South side of High Street form a group of listed buildings.
