Description

The milestone opposite No 53 on the south side of High Street dates from the 18th century. It is made of stone and stands about 2 feet 6 inches high. One side of the milestone features the inscription: "Romney 14: Rye 10: Ashford 12," while the other side reads: "Cranbrook 8: Rolvenden 3." This milestone is located at a point where a former Toll Gate crossed the street, with a Toll House situated on the opposite side of the road. The listed buildings on the south side, from Nos 17 to 57, form a group.
