Description
These are mid-19th century commercial premises, with number 30 possibly slightly earlier than number 31. Number 30 has a painted timber front, while number 31 has a stucco front. Both have three storeys. The upper storeys of each building feature eleven windows, separated by pilasters; the pilasters are wooden on number 30 and stucco with a wider design on number 31. The second-floor windows on number 30 have been fitted with later glazing bars. The first-floor windows on number 30 feature sash windows without glazing bars and flat arches with rounded corners. On number 31, all windows are recessed sash windows and lack glazing bars. The first floor also has flat arches with rounded corners. A stucco parapet tops the front, featuring three panels flanked by squat piers; the outer panels have cornices and rounded caps to the piers. A main cornice and frieze are present, as is a cornice and frieze to the first floor. The shop fronts are later additions with a modillion cornice and frieze, thin pilasters with fluted brackets and rounded caps, and windows with moulded mullions and plate glass. Numbers 30 and 31, together with numbers 3 and 4 St Thomas's Square, form a group.
