Description

3, 4, 4A and 5 Cross Street are three-storey houses from the late 18th century, part of a row that includes Nos 1 and 2. They feature pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with a first-floor block sill course. No 3 has one window, while Nos 4 and 5 have two windows each. The windows are recessed sash types, except for a modern casement on the second floor of No 3. All windows have intact glazing bars and block sills.

Nos 4 and 5 have three-light bay windows on the first floor, set into the wall on the east side. No 3 has sashes with intact glazing bars and pilaster strips that extend down into the apron of No 4. The buildings have a frieze and projecting cornices. No 3 features a modern shop front, while No 4 retains the frame of a mid-19th century shop front with a frieze and cornice supported by fluted pilasters, which divide two windows and flank side doors. The lower parts of the windows have plate glass but maintain four upper lights with marginal glazing bars, and there are panelled risers below. The doorway of No 4 (to the left) retains a lower panel, but the rest is glazed, with a rectangular fanlight above that has marginal glazing bars. No 4A (to the right) has an original three-panelled door and the same fanlight as No 4.

Nos 1 to 5 form a cohesive group.
