Description
No 1 High Street is a detached villa built around 1840 on the site of the Old Ryde Manor House. It is located at the back of the houses on Cross Street and High Street, accessible via a passage next to No 4. The villa is three storeys high, constructed of stone rubble with red brick dressings, and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof that is conical over the bow. There is a sill course at the second floor level.
The villa has three windows, with two located in the bow across all three storeys. The second-floor windows are recessed casements with flat brick arches, and yellow brick is used on the bow. The first floor has full-length recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars; the left-hand window has a block sill, and there are mid-19th century cast iron balconies on the bow that still display an Anthemion motif. The ground floor includes a later French window to the left, a recessed panelled and glazed door in the bow, and a window that has been blocked to leave only a small light. The window dressings on the bow, as on the other floors, are made of yellow brick. There is a modern addition of a garage and a first-floor conservatory to the east.
