Description

Nos 22 to 25 are terraced town houses built around 1776 to 1788, located on the northeast side of Manchester Square as part of the Duke of Manchester's development on Portman Estate land. They are constructed of brown brick, with stuccoed ground floors for Nos 23 to 25, and have concealed slate roofs. The buildings rise five storeys with basements and are four windows wide, except for No. 25, which features two windows facing the square and a five-window return to Hinde Street.

The doorways are square-headed and off-centre, featuring panelled doors and fanlights set within architraves that have half pilasters and cornices. No. 22 includes a Doric porch, while No. 25 has a semicircular arched entrance in the return, with panelled pilaster jambs and sidelights, all framed in a rusticated stucco surround with a cornice. The windows are recessed sashes under flat gauged arches, with plat bands and stucco cornices above the second floors. The buildings have stone or stucco coped parapets, original cast iron geometric patterned balconies on the first floor, and cast iron area railings topped with flambé torch or urn finials.
