Description

Nos. 2 to 5 Fitzhardinge Street are terraced townhouses built around 1780, linked to the Duke of Manchester's development of the nearby Manchester Square on Portman Estate land. The street serves as the western approach to the square. The houses are constructed of brown brick, with No. 5 featuring a deeply channelled stucco ground floor. They have slate roofs, some of which are hidden by parapets, and rise four storeys with basements, including dormered mansards or full attic storeys. Each house has a three-window wide front.

The doorways are semicircular arched, positioned to the right except for No. 5, which has broad double doors. The doors are panelled and include sidelights, fluted doorheads, and fanlights, with Nos. 2 and 4 displaying a looped radial pattern, while No. 5 has a fanlight above its double doors. The windows are recessed sashes beneath gauged flat arches, and there is a stucco sill band across the first floor. The parapets are topped with stone or stucco copings, and some first-floor windows are adorned with cast iron geometric patterned balconies. The area railings are made of cast iron with urn finials, and Nos. 2 and 3 feature scrolled wrought iron lampholders.
