Description
Nos. 1 to 3 Manchester Square are terraced town houses built around 1776 to 1788 as part of the Duke of Manchester's development on Portman Estate land. The houses are constructed of brown brick with concealed slate roofs. Nos. 1 and 2 are five storeys tall, while No. 3 has four storeys, all built on basements. Each house has a three-window wide front. The square-headed doorways are located to the left, featuring panelled doors and rectangular fanlights within architrave cases. Nos. 1 and 2 have half pilasters and cornices. The windows are recessed sashes, some of which have glazing bars, and are set under flat gauged arches. There are stucco plat bands between the storeys and stucco cornices above the second floors. The parapets are topped with stucco on stone copings. The properties are enclosed by cast iron area railings with flambé torch or urn finials. There are plaques from the London County Council noting that Sir Julius Benedict, a composer, resided at No. 2, and J.H. Jackson, a physician, lived at No. 3.
