Description
Nos. 9 and 11 Duke Street are a pair of terraced townhouses with later shops, built around 1776 to 1788 as part of the Duke of Manchester's development of Manchester Square on Portman land. The buildings are constructed of stock brick and feature a slate roof. They rise to four storeys, with No. 9 having an added dormered mansard. The original Victorian shop fronts have been altered. No. 9 includes a pilastered porch on the right side, while the upper floors of both houses have recessed sash windows set beneath flat gauged red brick arches, with No. 11 being rendered. No. 9 has a stone coped parapet, and No. 11 features a dentilled stucco cornice and a balustraded parapet. Additionally, there is a cast iron geometric patterned balustrade across the first floor of No. 9. These buildings are included for their group value.
