Description
Nos. 12-14 Manchester Square are a group of terraced town houses built around 1776-88 as part of the Duke of Manchester's development of the square on the Portman Estate. They are constructed of brown brick, with the ground floor of No. 13 being stuccoed. The roofs are concealed behind slate. The houses extend to four storeys and a basement, with No. 13 having an additional fifth storey. Nos. 12 and 13 each have a three-window front, while No. 14 has a four-window front. The square-headed doorways are located to the right of each facade and are accessed by short flights of steps over areas. These doorways have panelled doors, fanlights, and wooden architraves with half pilasters and cornices. The windows are recessed sash windows, some with glazing bars, and are set within flat, gauged arches. Stucco plat bands and cornices are visible above the second floor, and stone or stucco coped parapets top the buildings. An original cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern is present on the first floor of No. 14. The area railings are made of cast iron and have flambé torch or urn finials. No. 14 has a London County Council plaque recording it as the residence of Lord Milner. For the corner house with Fitzhardinge Street, refer to the listing for No. 18 Fitzhardinge Street.
