Description
Nos. 4 to 7 Manchester Square are terraced townhouses built around 1776 to 1788, with some alterations, as part of the Duke of Manchester's development on Portman Estate land. The buildings are constructed of brown brick, with the ground floors of Nos. 4 and 7 finished in stucco, and No. 6 having been refronted. They feature concealed slate roofs and are four storeys tall, except for Nos. 4 and 5, which have five storeys. Each house has a three-window wide front. The doorways are square-headed and located to the right, except for No. 7, and they have panelled doors with fanlights. Nos. 5 and 7 have wooden architrave cases with half pilasters and cornices. The windows are recessed sashes, some with glazing bars, set under flat gauged arches. Notably, No. 6 has a central first-floor window flanked by stone Ionic columns, topped with a pediment and balustrade. There are stucco plat bands between the floors and a stucco cornice (stone on No. 6) above the second floor, along with stucco or stone coped parapets. Nos. 4 and 7 still have their original first-floor cast or wrought iron geometric patterned balconies. The area railings are made of cast iron and feature flambé torch or urn finials, with Nos. 4, 5, and 7 also having wrought iron scrolled lampholders and link extinguishers.
