Description
Hinde Street Methodist Church is a Grade II listed church built between 1881 and 1887 by James Weir. It is constructed of gault brick, channelled at the ground floor, with brown stone dressings and a slate roof. The church is located on a corner site and features a classical design with some English Baroque influences.
The front of the church has a slightly projecting, central entrance portico that is two stories high and pedimented, flanked by pavilions that are reminiscent of St. Paul's Cathedral, complete with paired columns and a carved tympanum. At the western corner pavilion, there is a three-stage octagonal tower and spire, which is set above four solid finialed pinnacles at the corners. The lower stage of the tower features semicircular arched windows with engaged Corinthian columns at the angles, supporting an entablature and balustrade. The middle stage is smaller with narrow semicircular arched openings, while the spire stage is supported by consoles above pilasters.
Beyond the corner pavilion, the four-bay return to Thayer Street is set back, with ground floor windows similar to those on the front, featuring cornices on consoles. The gallery windows have dentilled pediments on pilasters and inset balustrades. The bays are divided by superimposed orders of Doric and Corinthian engaged columns, topped with a crowning entablature and balustraded parapet. The eastern corner pavilion was originally intended to have a balancing tower and spire.
