Description
The Church of St George is a Grade II listed church built between 1874 and 1877 by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. It is constructed of dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The church includes a nave with a gabled north aisle, a central tower with north transepts, a south vestry, and a chancel. Notable architectural details include sill courses, coped gables, and decorated tracery.
The 4-bay nave has two-light windows on the north side and a three-light window at the east end, along with two weathered buttresses. The west end features a five-light nave window set under a relieving arch, flanked by buttresses and topped with a gable cross, while the aisle has a two-light window. The south porch is gabled with diagonal buttresses and has a pointed entrance with continuous moulding and a quatrefoil frieze.
The tower is adorned with gabled angle buttresses and a northeast stair turret, featuring two south windows of two lights, paired two-light louvred bell openings, an embattled parapet with pinnacles, and a recessed octagonal spire with Incarnes. The transept showcases cusped blind arcading with small lights and spandrel cinquefoils, a traceried square window above, and large buttresses, along with a two-light east window.
The vestry has a lean-to roof, a straight-headed east light with rich mouldings, a south entrance, and a three-light window with plain coping. The chancel is topped with a traceried parapet and a gable cross, featuring a five-light east window with flanking buttresses and three-light windows on the north and south sides. Inside, the church has a five-bay north arcade and waggon roofs, although these were not inspected. The Church of St George stands as a prominent landmark in the area.
