Description
The Former Hodbarrow Mine Office, also known as The Commodore, is a building that dates back to 1873 and was likely designed by Hornblower of Liverpool. Originally serving as a mine office, it later became a bar and restaurant. The structure is constructed from coursed slate rubble with ashlar dressings, while the west side features roughcast. It has a hipped slate roof and a north elevation that consists of two storeys and four irregular bays. The building has a weathered base and two sill bands. The windows are sashed with horns and have lintels. The entrance to the second bay is framed with an architrave and features 20th-century paired panelled doors and an overlight, flanked by narrow windows with architraves. The first bay has an entrance with a lintel, a 20th-century door, and an overlight. There are three cross-axial stacks on the roof. The south elevation has four bays with similar windows and an entrance in the fourth bay. The east elevation includes a 20th-century fire escape. This building is the last remaining structure of Hodbarrow Mine, which was the world's largest iron mine in the late 19th century.
