Description

Millom Castle is a Grade I listed structure located in Millom, originally established as a castle or moated manor house. It received a license to crenellate in 1335, with the east range dating from the later 14th century. The great tower, which now functions as a farmhouse, was built in the 16th or 17th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings, and part of the house is roughcast, featuring parallel hipped slate roofs.

The house includes a hall to the north, while the east range has a central gatehouse and a kitchen range to the north, with a solar range to the south. The windows have pointed heads, and the east elevation features a projecting gatehouse with 17th-century steps; however, the front wall has collapsed, and there is a small projection to the south. The south elevation of the house displays varied windows with label moulds, predominantly tall 12-pane sashes, and a later two-storey wing to the west. There are cross-axial and return lateral stacks, along with an entrance to the wing.

The west elevation includes a pointed entrance and a window opening to the hall, along with an entrance featuring an overlight and two sashed windows for the house. There is a gabled out-house to the wing, which also has sashed windows. The north elevation has later barns attached. The solar range has a first floor with larger windows and an ogee-headed entrance, likely leading to a garderobe, at the south-west angle. The ground floor fireplace has a smoke hole leading to the outer hall, which features a finial. The gatehouse shows signs of a first floor, and a small courtyard to the west has the jamb of an entrance with a portcullis groove. The kitchen range contains a segmental-headed fireplace with a smoke hole in the outer wall. There are two pointed entrances to the hall, which has indications of an east dais and two former Y tracery north windows. The north elevation of the house has two pointed entrances leading to vaulted cellars, and there are sashed windows, one of which includes a bull's eye pane. The east elevation features a wide-boarded studded door. A moat surrounds the west and north sides of the castle. Millom Castle is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
