Description
Haverigg War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Lancashire (Stainton) limestone and features lead lettering. The memorial consists of a closed-wheel head cross made from limestone, with intaglio carved lettering that includes "HIS" and decorative strap work. This cross stands on a tapering four-sided shaft, which is supported by a tapering plinth and a single-stepped base with rough-hewn risers. The base is surrounded by white marble chippings and enclosed within a low square kerb.
An inscription on the shaft reads: "TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE/ MEN OF HAVERRIGG/ WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." The main face of the plinth lists the names of 35 individuals who fell during the First World War, while nine names from the Second World War are recorded on the sides in leaded lettering. The reverse side of the memorial is plain and unadorned.
