Description
Century Methodist Church is a Grade II listed building constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone with decorative Bath stone dressings. It features a slate roof with plain ridge tiles and has a T-plan layout, including gallery stair towers in the short arms of the T and a lower vestry added at the rear.
The church has a two-storey gable front divided into three bays, with the central bay being wider. This façade is accentuated by stepped pilasters that culminate in saddle-roofs and pinnacles. The central doorway is flanked by wide, ogee-arched spandrel panels above. The ground floor has small, high-level windows, while the sides of the doorway feature two-light windows with curved heads and single, multi-paned rectangular windows in each side bay. On the first floor, a large six-light window with Perpendicular tracery and a segmental head with ogee moulding dominates the gallery area, extending across the full width of the central bay. The main mullions of this window rise to a panelled apex that incorporates the dates '1900' and '1901'. Each side bay also has a rectangular two-light window that illuminates the stairways to the gallery.
The side elevations are single storey and include three tall, two-light windows with cinquefoil plate tracery. The low vestry block at the rear is constructed with yellow brick quoins instead of ashlar and features a slate ridge roof.
Inside, the church has a generally simple design with a slightly raked wooden floor. The raised pulpit is accessible by steps on either side, and there is a pointed arched recess behind it. The flat plaster ceiling has sloping sides, and there are three open timber roof trusses, which have been reinforced with six modern steel tie-bars to prevent potential bowing of the side walls. The rear gallery has a panelled wood front supported by iron columns, and the organ located in the gallery was originally from a Methodist chapel in Peterborough. A recent brick partition with two doors and three windows has been added under the front of the gallery to create an entrance vestibule; previously, the entrance doors led directly into the chapel. Return stairs to the gallery open directly off either end of the vestibule.
