Description

This is a coach house dating from the Neo-Renaissance style period. It is constructed of red brick with brick chimney stacks detailed with stone, decorative and plain bargeboards, tile roofs, ridge tiles, and scalloped tiles in the gables. The building is arranged around a central open courtyard, with a two-storey entrance range on the southeast side, and the remainder of the structure being single-storey.

The southeast entrance elevation has six bays, with a central arched entrance bay featuring an oriel window and a gable above. This oriel window has four lights with slender cusped ogee lights, two facing forward and one on each side. An apron extends from the arch keystone, displaying a projecting date plaque. A battlemented cornice tops the elevation. The entrance arch is constructed of rounded stonework, with cusped imposts, a projecting keystone, and a plinth. Three bays to the left create a symmetrical composition, with gabled outer bays containing small-paned casement windows on both floors. These windows have projecting sills and flat aprons with scroll decoration. Smaller, four-pane, flat-headed windows are centrally located. Two bays to the right have small casement windows with rounded heads; the lower window on the right has been replaced with a larger modern window. A continuous string course, made up of individual floral decorative tiles interspersed with plain brick, runs immediately below the eaves.

The northeast return elevation features two windows in the upper floor of the two-storey entrance range gable, and one round-headed lower window, all later replacements. This side steps down to the single-storey range, with a similar window followed by a door to a cottage, now having a later glazed door with overlight. A service area continues from this point, incorporating a wide transom window to the garage area and a boarded door to an outside WC. A gabled end defines the northwest range, with two transom windows. The southwest range has a similar layout, with a blank two-storey gable of the entrance range. A door is located to the left of the central single-storeyed portion, accompanied by a wide window to the side and a smaller, higher window, both replacements. Two large rooflights are present. A transom window is part of the gable of the northwest range. The northwest range has seven bays, with three windows to the garage area, a single window and door to a storage room, and then three windows to the laundry room.

Inside the courtyard, the elevations include a gabled entrance arch with a partially blocked former loading door above, and a door to the cottage on the right. On the southwest side, there is a square oriel with overhanging eaves and a dormer above, both later replacements. A large, flat chimney stack, serving the laundry room, is situated in the west corner, with a single window in the northwest range. The northeast side is partially open with an overhanging canopy, two windows, and a door in the east corner leading to the cottage.

The walls of the service area are lined with glazed brown brick, featuring a blue brick dado course. The floors are largely concrete, with some areas in the northeast range incorporating parquet flooring, including a vehicle maintenance pit. Boarded ceilings and boxes for roller shutters remain. The northwest range contains two separated rooms accessed by steps from the north corner; a storage room followed by a laundry room retaining original drying cabinet, fittings, and shelving. This drying cabinet is also lined with glazed brick and incorporates two floor-length vertical cast iron drawers containing clothes airers on either side of a central stove. The interiors of the cottages have not been inspected.
