Description
The Church Inn is a Georgian style inn dating from the 18th century, featuring two storeys made of rendered stone beneath replaced slate roofs with rendered stacks. The southern range is wider and lower, with a flat-roofed porch to the left of the centre, likely from the early 20th century. This porch has a half-glazed and wood panelled door with double doors. The lower storey has hornless sash windows with flat heads; to the right of the doorway is a wide 12-over-12-pane sash window, and to the left and far right are 8-over-8-pane sash windows. The upper storey features three similar 8-over-8-pane sash windows under cambered heads, which are not aligned with those below. There is a fire-escape door to the far left, accessed by a metal staircase. Adjacent to the west gable of the southern range is a lower bay made of rubble stone, followed by large late 20th century additions. The southern range has end stacks and a ridge stack at the centre, with the right stack corbelled at the first floor level on the eastern gable end.
The northern front of the northern range has a porch to the right of centre, similar to the southern side. To the left are three 8-over-8-pane horned sash windows with flat heads, and to the right of the porch is a late 20th century multi-pane casement window. The upper storey has four 4-pane horned sash windows with cambered heads, arranged symmetrically. There are stacks to the left end and right of centre. The west gable features a small late 20th century casement window offset to the right, with a single-storey lean-to below that has a large late 20th century window on the northern side.
Inside the southern porch, there is a part-glazed 20th century door with a cambered head. The lobby entrance leads directly to a chimney, with doorways to the right and left. The right doorway opens into a large eastern room, which was formerly the hall and inner room. It features an original stone fireplace with a central chimney, complete with a chamfered and slightly cambered timber lintel. The ceiling has three cross-beams that are medium chamfered with ogee stops. To the left of the entrance is a smaller room, originally the kitchen, which has a large bar to the right with a boarded front that runs along the centre of the building and also serves the northern range. Near the bar is a cross-beam with ogee stops, along with another beam that is encased or replaced to the west. The floor is made of flagstones. Beyond are kitchens and cloakrooms, where there was originally a fireplace with a bake-oven. The northern range is open-plan.
