Description
The Church of St John is a Grade II listed church built in 1879 by G. E. Street. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a tile roof. The church features a four-bay nave, a three-bay north aisle, and a two-bay chancel, with a square tower located over the first bay on the south side. The windows are designed with Decorated tracery and include two-light, three-light, and four-light configurations, with a large four-light window at the east end. The west façade has two tall two-light windows separated by a buttress, and a circular feature in the apex of the west gable displays four trefoils. A circular stair turret with a conical roof is positioned on the south side of the tower, which rises one stage above the roof ridge and includes two-light, louvred belfry openings topped with a saddleback roof.
Inside, the nave has a two-bay north arcade supported by short octagonal piers and features an arch-braced roof. The chancel contains a piscina and sedilia, with a stone vaulted roof in the first bay and a wooden vaulted roof in the second bay. The floor is made of wood blocks, and there is a round stone pulpit on a pedestal with a stone spiral stair. The pews are straight-backed and straight-sided.
