Description

Manor Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse located on Cross Street in Monk Bretton. It features deeply-coursed rubble stonework, with the right gable rendered and a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and a near-symmetrical facade with four bays. The entrance is positioned to the right of the third bay and has a chamfered quoined surround. To the right of the entrance, there is a two-light window on each floor. On the left side, there are two six-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground and first floors, with two-light windows on the second floor, and a bay of single-light windows that have transoms on the ground and first floors. Many of the windows have been altered, with some mullions and transoms removed and replaced with later casements, although some chamfered surrounds remain, and the second-storey windows are intact. There are weathered string courses between the floors and chamfered gable copings on cut kneelers. A later central stack is present.

At the rear, there is an addition on the left side with three bays; the central bay features single-light windows, while the side bays have three-light windows on the ground and first floors and two-light windows in the attic. All windows in this section are double-chamfered, with some blocked or partially blocked, and the ground and first-floor windows have dripmoulds. The left return includes an external stone stair leading to a narrow attic doorway with a chamfered surround and a small two-light overlight with a small dripmould.

Inside, the roof is supported by raised trusses, which may have been designed that way rather than being heightened.
