Description
Priory Mill is a former priory mill that has been converted into a public house and restaurant. It likely dates back to the 13th century but was significantly remodeled or rebuilt in 1635 by Sir William Armyne, with further alterations made in the 19th century, including changes to the roof. The building is constructed of squared, deeply-coursed stone, featuring a Welsh slate roof on the right side and a stone slate roof on the left. It has a long rectangular plan, with the right section projecting forward.
The road-facing elevation has a wide entrance on the left with a deep square lintel supported by imposts. To the left of the entrance, there are altered double-chamfered openings, including a two-light window, all beneath a continuous hoodmould. The projecting right section contains various altered double-chamfered openings, also with a continuous hoodmould that has a spiral stop at the right end. The upper floor dates from the 19th century.
On the rear elevation, there is a round-arched opening on the left and a wide square-headed opening on the right, both at ground-floor level for water courses. The first floor features two two-light double-chamfered windows, one of which may have been reset. Near the center of the rear elevation, there are remains of a possible external chimney breast.
Inside, the layout is symmetrical, with a small chamber at each end that contains a wheel pit. The central chamber has mountings for the machinery. The mill was powered by water brought from the River Dearne via a leat, which included a large stone drain that led to the nearby Monk Bretton Priory, where it was used to flush the kitchen and reredorter before returning to the leat.
