Description

Number 726 and the attached former barn are located on Doncaster Road in Ardsley. The house, which was originally a cottage, dates from the late 18th century, while the cottage itself is from the early 19th century. The former barn is believed to have timberwork from the 16th or 17th century, likely encased in the 19th century. The structures are built of squared, coursed rubble with Welsh slate roofs, and the barn is constructed of stone.

The house is two stories with an attic and has one bay facing the road. It features altered openings on its front and gable copings on cut kneelers, with a central stone stack. The right gable wall includes a single-light window in a raised surround on both the ground and first floors, along with a smaller window in the gable apex. The cottage, which extends at a right angle from the rear of the house, is also two stories and has two bays. It has a blocked doorway on the left and altered windows on the right, with two windows on the first floor.

The former barn, located to the right of the cottage, consists of two internal bays. It has a part-blocked central doorway, a later doorway on the left, and a single window on the right. The stone building to the right of the barn is not of special interest.

Inside the barn, the wall plates are intact, and there are three king-post trusses. The left truss has posts that are partially encased in the walls, while the two outer trusses retain diagonal studding. The central truss is open and all trusses are braced to the ridge. The outer trusses have stud housings on the underside of the tie-beam, and the central truss features housings for posts and braces on the underside of the tie-beam. The roof is supported by a single purlin.
