Description
Nos. 53 to 60 Upper Berkeley Street are terraced townhouses built around 1800 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with stuccoed ground floors, except for No. 55. The ground floors of Nos. 54 and 56 to 58 are rusticated, and the roofs are concealed slate. Nos. 53 to 57 have five storeys and basements, while Nos. 58 to 60 have four storeys and basements. The houses typically have two-window wide fronts, except for No. 59, which has three windows, and No. 60, which is double fronted with four windows.
The doorways are semicircular arched and located to the left, except for Nos. 53 and 60, which have right-hand and central placements, respectively. The doors are panelled with enriched jambs and reeded heads under fanlights, with No. 56 retaining a radial pattern. No. 56 also features an elaborate cast iron porch. The upper floors have recessed sashes under flat gauged arches with stuccoed reveals, and the ground floor of No. 55 also has stuccoed reveals. A plat band finishes the ground floor stuccowork, and Nos. 53 to 57 have a stucco string course below the top floor. The buildings are topped with crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses, with modillion brackets on Nos. 53 to 57, while No. 59 has a plain parapet coping.
There are continuous cast iron balconies with geometric or pendant anthemion patterns on the first floor, and Nos. 59 and 60 feature wrought iron balconettes. The area railings are made of cast iron with urn finials.
