Description

Nos. 29 and 30 Upper Berkeley Street are a pair of terraced houses built around 1800 as part of the Portman Estate development. The upper section of the front of No. 29 was partially rebuilt at a later date. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stucco ground floors; No. 29 has a rusticated facade. They have concealed slate roofs. No. 29 is four storeys high, while No. 30 is five storeys high, both with a basement level. Each front is three windows wide. The doorways are square-headed, with No. 30 having engaged, fluted columns lacking their capitals and cornices, along with panelled doors and fanlights. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows, each set under a flat, gauged arch. A plat band runs above the stucco ground floor. The houses have parapets with stone copings. No. 29 features a cast iron balcony with a geometric patterned design across the first floor, while No. 30 has window guards. Cast iron area railings are topped with urn finials. The buildings are included in the listing primarily for their contribution to the group value of the street.
