Description

These are four houses at 103-109 Grove Lane, Southwark, built between 1820 and 1840. They are constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a header bond used on the bay of number 109. The exterior is finished with stucco dressings and features a parapeted roof.

The houses are two storeys high. Numbers 103 and 109 have two windows across their front, while the others have three. Each house has a round-arched entrance with a fanlight above; number 105 has a simple architrave, while the others have a prominent keystone. Flat-arched windows have architraves, and each ground-floor window is a French door with a pediment. An entablature band runs between the ground and first floors, aligning with the window sills. A continuous entablature sits above the first-floor windows. Segmental bay windows extend the full height of the building, situated to the side of each entrance range, with numbers 105 and 107 being two window widths and number 109 one window wide. Number 103 has a matching bay window to that of number 109, creating a formal symmetry for the four houses. Stacks are located on the party walls. The French doors at number 109 retain their original glazing. Windows at numbers 105 and 109 are 2x2 sashes with margin lights, while number 107 has original 3x3 sash windows of a matching design. The interiors have not been inspected. Number 103 is included in the listing primarily for group value due to its altered condition.
