Description

Numbers 51 to 54 form a group of four houses built between 1810 and 1835 on the south side of Sutherland Square. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with stucco dressings. They have hipped roofs covered in concrete tile and slate, and two storeys over a basement. Each house has three windows. Steps lead up to the entrances, which are set in a recessed range, with the entrances to numbers 52 and 53 paired together. The entrances are framed by a moulded architrave, beneath a Tuscan porch. All the window and door openings are flat-arched, with a sill band running across the first floor. A band acts as an entablature, below the projecting eaves. Full-height pilasters are present on the party walls and at the corners of the recessed entrance area. Numbers 53 and 54 have original 6x6 sash windows. Chimney stacks are located on the party walls. The interior has not been inspected. Number 51 has cast-iron railings, decorated with an anthemion pattern. These railings, along with the houses, are included in the listing for their group value.
