Description
These are two houses located on Monmouth Street, Bridgwater, built around the 1830s and 1850s. The houses are constructed of Flemish-bond brick with stone stepped voussoirs above the windows and stone cills, topped with a continuous slate roof and brick stacks to the right of each house. Each house has a double-depth plan.
The houses are two storeys high and each has a two-window front. The first-floor windows have flat arches, while the ground-floor windows have semicircular arches, each containing a six-over-six pane sash window with margin panes. To the left of each house is an eight-panel door, above which sits a semicircular fanlight with radiating glazing bars.
Number 42, on the left, has bracketed eaves, late 19th-century horned two-over-two pane sash windows to the first floor, glazed top four panels of the door, and a late 19th-century gabled hood supported by brackets with a wavy bargeboard and horizontal planking below. Number 40, without bracketed eaves, has a plain gutter, 20th-century windows to the first floor, and a swept gabled hood on slender columns with a circular motif in the centre, likely dating to the early or mid-19th century. The interiors have not been inspected.
