Description
St John's House, built in the early to mid 19th century and altered in the late 19th century, is a house located on Monmouth Street in Bridgwater. It features Flemish-bond brickwork with stone stepped voussoirs, bays, and a doorcase. The roof is a bracketed hipped slate design with a brick stack on the right. The house has a double-depth plan and is two storeys high, presenting a symmetrical three-window range.
The first-floor windows have flat arches and are fitted with 19th-century horned 2/2-pane sashes. The central entrance bay slightly projects forward and is framed by a wide semicircular gauged brick arch. The doorcase includes a plain painted stone inner arch with moulded cornice imposts supported by painted iron Tuscan columns and wooden antae. The entrance features an 8-panel curved door set in a concave recess, topped with an ornamental fanlight. An inner door, which was originally 8-panel, now has late 19th-century glazing at the top with coloured and engraved margin panes. The outer hall includes panelling with added moulding above and to the sides of the door.
On either side of the house, there are large single-storey late 19th-century semicircular bays that have heavy cornices, curved corners at the tops of the 2/2-pane sash windows, foliate capitals on the mullions, and wide cills. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to contain early to mid 19th-century fireplaces and other features.
Additionally, there is a subsidiary feature: an English-bond brick wall approximately 3 meters high and 40 meters long attached to the right return, which has a timber lintel over a hatch on the left that leads to the garden.
