Description
46, 48, and 48A Monmouth Street are three mid-19th century houses located in Bridgwater. They are constructed of Flemish-bond brick and feature stone doorcases and label moulds above all front windows. The houses have a continuous slate roof with brick stacks at the gable ends and the party wall. The buildings have double-depth plans and are two storeys high with basements. No. 48A, on the left, has a one-window range, while the others have a two-window range. They are set well above the road, with steps leading up to the doors.
The right-hand range of No. 46 is slightly stepped forward and has a 6/6-pane sash window on both floors. Above a 6-panel door with an overlight, there is a projecting Tuscan porch supported by paired square columns, with "Monmouth House" painted below the cornice. Nos. 48 and 48A form a symmetrical group, featuring paired 6-panel doors, overlights, and a shared cornice, flanked by 20th-century windows that were likely originally 8/8-pane sashes. The first-floor centre window is part of No. 48. The interiors have not been inspected.
