Description
Numbers 55-60 Sutherland Square consist of six houses built between 1810 and 1835. They are constructed with brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco dressings. The roofs are parapeted. Each house has three storeys over a basement, and features two windows. All entrances are accessed by stairs and are set within a Tuscan-style portico. The entrances to the end houses are located on side returns, each flanked by a blind window. All windows are flat-arched. Ground-floor windows have moulded architraves and cornices, each supported by a pair of decorative console brackets. Upper-floor windows have gauged brick lintels. A sill band runs along the first-floor windows. A continuous entablature extends to the parapet. The joins between the upper floors of numbers 56 & 57, and 58 & 59, are recessed, while the pair formed by numbers 57 & 58 projects slightly. The windows are sash windows of 19th-century design, featuring broad margin lights. Party walls have chimney stacks. The interior has not been inspected. The property includes railings to the basement areas, and is included in the listing for its group value.
