Description
These are a terrace of houses, numbers 84 to 98 (even), dating from approximately 1845, located on the north side of St Paul’s Road in Islington. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick and stucco, with a parapet concealing the roof. They are arranged as three storeys over a basement, with two windows visible on each floor.
The basement level is stuccoed and contains cambered-arched windows. The ground floor has stucco with banded rustication, and steps lead to a round-arched entrance. The recessed doorcase and fanlight are set within a recessed round arch of smooth stucco. The ground-floor windows are also recessed within round-arched panels. The upper storeys feature flat-arched windows with gauged-brick heads, topped by a parapet. Balconies are shared between the first-floor windows of numbers 86 to 98, with some retaining their original cast-iron railings.
Number 84 retains its original pilastered doorcase, panelled door, fanlight, and sash windows to the ground floor. The sills of the first-floor windows have been raised. Number 86 has similar entrance details, but with a renewed fanlight. Numbers 88 and 90 feature original sash windows on the ground floor and cast-iron railings for their balconies. Number 92 has engaged, massively fluted columns to the doorcase, a panelled door with original design, decorative glazing to the fanlight, original radiating glazing bars to the ground-floor window, and cast-iron balcony railings. Number 94 mirrors the details of number 92, with a similar doorcase, fanlight, ground-floor sash windows, and balcony railings. Number 96 retains original sash windows to the first floor. Number 98 contains a 18th-century doorcase and panelled door and also has original cast-iron balcony railings.
The railings of numbers 84 to 94 are characterized by spear-and-tassel finials and anthemion ornament panels; some finials and features are missing. The railings of numbers 96 to 98 are finished with spearhead finials.
